Top 10 Tips for Writing Press Releases

  1. Know Your Audience
    Determine who you want to reach: small business owners, sports fans, parents, the general public?

  2. Identify the Media
    Find out what your target audience reads, watches or listens to.

  3. Target the Right Person
    Read, listen, watch or call your target media to identify the person who covers your subject area.

  4. Include a Contact Name
    Provide a name and phone number at the top of your release the media can call for additional information.

  5. Make it Newsworthy
    Write about something people want to know about.

  6. Answer the Five "W's"
    Provide the Who, What, When, Where and Why in the body of your release.

  7. Provide all Necessary Information
    Include the important details, such as the location, date and time for an upcoming event.

  8. Use a Strong Headline
    But don't be overly cute.

  9. Keep it Short and Simple
    One to two pages - tops.

  10. Read Before You Send
